Our History
Since 2008, our President, Mario Matos, has been a dedicated short-term missionary. His commitment to helping others was evident during some of our nation’s most challenging times. After the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, Mario didn’t hesitate to jump into action. He made multiple trips to aid the recovery efforts, bring supplies and offer his expertise whenever it was needed.
His skills as a tradesman have also taken him to the Ivory Coast where he installed plumbing in a girls’ school and then to Belize and Guatemala where he provided hands-on assistance.
In 2014, Mario first went to San Pedro De Marcoris in the Dominican Republic. His instant connection with the young men and their struggles to get ahead touched his heart deeply. The reality is it is nearly impossible to focus on anything with an empty stomach. Food insecurity and lack of housing were the most prevalent issues. Thus, the goal of A Hand Up Group is to provide housing and food which will allow families hope for the future.

Our mission is to bring help, hope and a hand up to those in need through compassionate faith-driven service. We believe in the power of love in action, and through our efforts, we aim to uplift, empower and restore dignity to those facing hardships. Our organization stands as a beacon of support, working tirelessly to provide the resources, skills and encouragement needed to build stronger, more resilient communities.

We are a dedicated team of unpaid volunteers who are driven by deep commitment to making a real difference. We believe in the power of love expressed through action, and we have united to share that love in meaningful impactful ways. Our mission is to uplift those in need, providing basic necessities and a helping hand when it’s needed most whether locally or internationally. While our efforts span the entire year, we focus intensely in the months leading up to our planned, short term mission trips, ensuring that we can make the greatest possible impact.
